Republican Cuts Are Wrecking Health Care for American Families

March 26, 2026

February Tally of Layoffs, Closures and Harms to the American Health Care System Reveals Looming Crisis Following Republicans’ Record Cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act

Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and House Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone Jr., D-N.J., today released their latest report spotlighting the consequences of Donald Trump and Republicans’ health care nightmare, with a focus on the fallout of the Republican Big Ugly Bill.

After Trump and Republicans gutted more than $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in July 2025, growing numbers of health care clinics are closing, workers are being laid off, patients are losing insurance coverage, and states are scrambling to fill budget gaps.

“In red states and blue states alike, Republican health care cuts are hitting communities like a wrecking ball,” Wyden said. “Despite attempts by Trump and his allies to cast blame elsewhere, the stories and facts are rolling in from across the country. Democrats will not stop elevating the voices of Americans whose health is in harm's way as a result of Republicans’ health care cuts.”

“People are losing their health insurance, hospitals are closing, and costs are rising for families across the country thanks to Trump’s Big Ugly Bill,” Pallone said. “Billionaires and big corporations got huge tax breaks and middle- class American families are paying the price while their health is on the line.”

Six months into the Big Ugly Bill’s enactment, the toll is mounting: over 6,400 workers have been laid off, and 115 hospitals and clinics have shut their doors or eliminated services like maternity care, primary care, or behavioral health services.

Earlier this month, Wyden and Pallone released a report cataloguing the impact of the Republican cuts for the month of January.
