Republican Health Care Cuts Are Decimating American Families

October 8, 2026

July and August Tally of Layoffs, Closures, and Harms to the American Health Care System Reveals Looming Crisis Following Republicans’ Cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act

Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and House Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr., D-N.J., today released their latest report spotlighting the consequences of Donald Trump and Republicans’ health care cuts, with a focus on the fallout of the Republican Big Ugly Bill.

“It has been over a year since Trump's Big Ugly Bill hit the Americans health care system like a wrecking ball, leaving states and communities across the country in financial crisis," Wyden said. “The Trump administration and their Republican allies continue to deflect the devastating consequences of their catastrophic cuts, while millions of Americans around the country grapple with higher costs, worse coverage, and more red tape.”

“In the year since President Trump signed his Big Ugly Bill, millions of Americans have lost their insurance coverage, premiums and deductibles are higher than ever, hospitals are shutting down, and essential workers are being laid off on a monthly basis,” Pallone said. “It’s time to stop this madness and reverse the Republican health care cuts.”

Numbers from July and August demonstrate a continuing attack on Americans’ health care.

  • The Trump Administration improperly kicked three-quarters of a million Americans off of their coverage: 760,000 low- and middle-income American families were kicked off their Affordable Care Act (ACA) coverage as the Trump Administration colludes with insurance companies to terminate coverage without cause for individuals and families simply because they had not seen a doctor this year.
  • In just July and August, dozens of hospitals and clinics closed, and others are struggling to remain in operation: 31 hospital closures, clinic closures, and service reductions across 13 states and Washington, D.C.: California, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wyoming.
  • Essential health care workers are losing their jobs at alarming rates: Nearly 400 employees have been laid off across five states and Washington, D.C.: California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Montana, and Tennessee.
  • These catastrophic numbers reflect the cost of gutting over $1 trillion from Medicaid and the ACA. Trump's legislation has wreaked havoc on the American health care system. Since the bill passed, health insurance premiums have soared, 339 clinics and hospitals have closed across 45 states, and over 11,000 health care employees from 31 states and D.C. have lost their jobs.

Last month, Wyden and Pallone released a report on the impact of Republican health care cuts for June 2026.
