Pallone on EPA’s Actions Against Fiat Chrysler America

January 12, 2017

Washington, D.C. – Energy and Commerce Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) released the following statement today in response to the Environmental Protection Agency's notice alleging that Fiat Chrysler America knowingly violated the Clean Air Act by using software in its vehicles to circumvent emissions standards testing for certain air pollutants:

"Today's news that EPA notified Fiat Chrysler America of Clean Air Act violations related to the alleged installation of defeat devices on a number of its automobiles is extremely troubling. If true, such deceitful actions violate the law and mislead consumers, while other law-abiding companies are disadvantaged and the public health is put at risk.

"Following Volkswagen's efforts to do an end run around the Clean Air Act and public health protections, this new development shows why we need to maintain strong federal environmental enforcement. The integrity of the Clean Air Act is crucial to protecting public health for all Americans. If Fiat Chrysler America followed in Volkswagen's footsteps, EPA should again pursue the most severe action possible. I applaud the Obama Administration for its vigorous environmental enforcement in this area, and urge President-elect Trump to continue to pursue swift and strong action when the public is being intentionally deceived and harmed by these greedy and inexcusable actions."
