Pallone on FDA’s Announcement of a New Regulatory Framework for Tobacco Products

July 28, 2017

Energy and Commerce Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), released the following statement today in response to the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) announcement of a new regulatory framework for tobacco products:

"While I'm pleased Commissioner Gottlieb is taking steps to address tobacco addiction and nicotine reduction, I'm concerned FDA's announcement will delay important provisions of the final deeming rule for products like e-cigarettes, cigars, and pipe tobacco. Today's announcement means many of these products will continue to lack needed public health oversight for several years, risking continued exposure to a new generation.

"FDA must exercise its authority over tobacco products to protect Americans from the harmful effects of tobacco usage, and I believe that all provisions of the final deeming rule should be implemented without delay. FDA can and should continue its work to lower nicotine levels in combustible cigarettes, but these efforts should not impede the timely implementation of the deeming rule."
