Pallone Praises Signing of Historic Paris Agreement to Combat Global Climate Change on Earth Day

April 22, 2016

Energy and Commerce Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) today offered the following statement praising nearly 200 nations for signing the Paris Climate Agreement.

Today’s historic signing of the Paris Agreement by the U.S. and nearly 200 nations demonstrates the strong international unity to fighting global climate change. Today’s signing ceremony represents commitments from the world’s countries to act on climate change, and the U.S. has demonstrated strong leadership in the effort to secure such an ambitious and lasting agreement.

It’s fitting that the Paris Agreement is being signed on Earth Day, which reminds us all of our moral responsibility to safeguard the only planet we have. Across the globe, we must prioritize environmental stewardship and come together to advance policies that reduce carbon pollution and accelerate growth in cleaner sources of energy.

The signing of the Paris Agreement is the culmination of years of international negotiations, and sets a strong foundation for action that will accelerate the shift to a clean energy economy, provides important guidance for future energy policy decisions and puts us on the path to a safer, healthier planet for generations to come.
