Pallone Statement on GOP’s Radical New Subcommittee to Attack Women’s Health

September 28, 2015

Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) issued the following statement regarding the Republican majority's decision to form a new subcommittee, within the jurisdiction of the Energy and Commerce Committee, to continue to investigate unsubstantiated claims made against Planned Parenthood:

"The Republicans' obsession with denying women access to health care has reached a dangerous new level. The majority has once again brought us to the brink of financial disaster, with another partisan government shutdown just days away. But instead of working to keep our country running, they have irresponsibly decided to continue prioritizing a political witch hunt.

"For months, Republicans have been fixated on demonizing an organization that provides life-saving preventative care for 2.8 million patients every year. They have already wasted this Committee's time and resources attacking Planned Parenthood under the guise of an investigation. To date, no evidence has been found to substantiate their claims against Planned Parenthood, but the Republican majority is still intent on ignoring the facts in order to pander to the most extreme elements of their party. Not only are they willing to bring the federal government to a standstill, they are prepared to waste millions of taxpayer dollars and change the rules of the House in order to justify their assault on women's health.

"The Energy and Commerce Committee has serious work to do. We have a long tradition of tackling some of the most challenging issues facing our country and working together to find solutions for the American people. This political stunt is unworthy of that tradition. I urge the majority not to exploit this Committee as part of another blatant attempt to restrict women's access to the health care that they and their families need."
