Pallone Welcomes Historic Energy-Saving Efficiency Standards

December 17, 2015

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced historic energy efficiency standards for commercial air conditioners and furnaces that will help cut carbon emissions and operating costs for businesses in the coming decades.

"Last week, nearly every nation on the planet agreed to historic efforts to reduce carbon emissions, and improved energy efficiency standards will be crucial to meeting those commitments," said Energy & Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ). "Here at home, these new standards will help American consumers and businesses save energy and billions of dollars, with the added benefit of reducing the carbon pollution that is warming our planet. I commend DOE for moving forward on these long overdue standards."

Over the next 30 years, the new DOE efficiency standards will:

• Save businesses an estimated $167 billion on their utility bills
• Cut carbon pollution by the 885 million metric tons — equivalent to the annual electricity used by 122 million homes, or nearly every home in the United States.
