Pallone and Schakowsky Blast Illegal Attempts to Fire Consumer Product Safety Commissioners

May 9, 2025

Top E&C Democrats Rebuke Trump’s Willingness to Jeopardize Consumer Product Safety by Seeking to Strip the Consumer Product Safety Commission of its Bipartisan Independent Leadership

Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade Subcommittee Ranking Member Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) issued the following statement today on President Trump’s illegal attempt to fire all three Democratic commissioners on the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), CommissionersAlex Hoehn-Saric, and Richard Trumka, Jr., and Mary Boyle without cause:

“President Trump’s illegal attempts to fire without just cause the Democratic Commissioners on the Consumer Product Safety Commission is the latest in a series of his efforts to subvert the legislative authority of Congress and put consumers at risk of serious harm. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is a very small agency tasked with a massive job – to keep consumers, including our kids, safe from hazards posed by thousands of consumer products – from infant car seats to weed whackers. President Trump’s attempts to consolidate power to himself comes at the expense of the physical safety of all American consumers and our children. All Americans who rely on the safety of the products they purchase for themselves and for their children should be outraged by the President’s decision. We hope that our judicial system will act quickly to address this abuse of power and reinstate the Commissioners to their rightful positions.”

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is the independent government agency charged with ensuring the safety of consumer products and protecting the public from unreasonable risk of injury or death.
