Pallone Applauds Landmark EPA Actions to Address Power Plant Pollution & Prioritize Public Health

April 25, 2024

Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) released the following statement today applauding the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) historic work to reduce climate pollution, mercury and air toxics, and coal ash from fossil fuel power plants:

“Today is a great day for climate action and putting the health and well-being of the American people before corporate polluters’ profits.

“EPA is tackling the climate crisis head on by finalizing the first carbon pollution standards in our nation’s history to crack down on fossil fuel-fired power plant pollution. This pollution is the second largest source of climate pollution in the United Statesthreatening Americans’ health and fueling the climate crisis.

“EPA is also protecting communities from toxic pollution from fossil fuel power plants. Stronger mercury and air toxics standards and coal ash standards for legacy sites will safeguard the health of children and vulnerable communities across the country from deadly pollution like mercury, arsenic, and chromium. These vital protections are long overdue.

I commend the Biden Administration’s unwavering commitment to Americans’ right to clean air and a safe environment.  Today’s final actions, combined with the historic investments Democrats made last Congress, will put us on track to cleaner air, better health, a safer climate, and a stronger economy.  All while ensuring reliability and affordability for American families.
