Pallone: Republicans Are Plotting Insidious Per Capita Caps Funding Cuts to Take Health Care Away
Republicans Intend to Slash Funding for Medicaid, Which Provides Health Care for Nearly Half of All Children
Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) released the following statement today as House Republicans plot devastating cuts to our nation’s largest health care program:
“Republicans are plotting insidious funding cuts that will result in tens of millions of Americans losing their health care.
“The so-called “per capita caps” that Chair Guthrie and Republican leadership favor would bankrupt states—including red states—and lead to hospital closures and layoffs of doctors and nurses across the country.
“Regardless of whether Republicans ultimately pursue per capita caps or some other harmful policy, cutting at least $880 billion from Medicaid will be devastating not only in the short term, but in the long term. These cuts will increasingly suffocate state budgets for decades to come—long after Trump leaves office.
“Medicaid is a lifeline for nearly 80 million Americans. It provides health care coverage for nearly half of all children. Yet, Republicans are right now plotting devastating cuts to the health care program that would result in millions of people losing their health care.
“The Republican budget is a rip-off that will take health care away from children and people with disabilities, shutter hospitals and nursing homes, and bankrupt states all so that the rich can get richer.”
