Pallone on Unanimous Supreme Court TikTok Decision

January 17, 2025

Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision upholding the federal law requiring ByteDance-owned companies, including TikTok, to divest from foreign adversary control by January 19th to continue operating in the United States:

“The Supreme Court’s unanimous decision sends a clear message: the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act is the law of the land.

“Congress passed this law with overwhelming bipartisan support because we know that TikTok and other Beijing-controlled applications present a major threat to our national security.

“TikTok now has a decision to make: if the company wants to continue to operate in the United States it must divest from Chinese Communist Party control. I urge ByteDance to recognize that it's time to sell TikTok. Spending lavishly to celebrate the President-elect's inauguration, and sending the CEO to sit on the dais does not change federal law or override a unanimous decision by the highest court in the land.”
