E&C Democrats Send Follow-up Questions to Zuckerberg

April 25, 2018

“It’s been two weeks since our hearing and we have yet to receive any responses to questions that Mr. Zuckerberg could not answer on that day”

The Energy and Commerce Committee Democrats today sent Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg a list of hundreds of follow-up questions that he could either not answer at the hearing or questions that Democratic Committee members developed as a result of his testimony before the Committee.

"It's been two weeks since our hearing and we have yet to receive responses to questions that Mr. Zuckerberg could not answer on that day," Energy and Commerce Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) said. "Furthermore, our Committee staff met with Facebook staffers two weeks prior to the hearing, and there are still a lot of unanswered questions from that meeting. I understand the magnitude and scope of Facebook's business, but it simply should not take this long to respond to this Committee's questions about critical privacy and data security issues.

"I'm hopeful that the questions we are sending today will receive prompt responses from Facebook because the company has yet to fully account for all of the data that it has on both users and non-users and how it uses that data," Pallone continued. "This information is critical as the Committee looks to develop comprehensive privacy and data security legislation that would include any company that collects and uses consumers' data."

During the April 12 hearing, Zuckerberg either could not answer or said that he would follow-up on more than 20 questions that were asked by Committee members, including at least 15 from Democratic Committee members. Among the questions that Zuckerberg said he would follow up with the Committee included:

  • What specific information is available to users when they use the "Download Your Information" tool?
  • How many firms other than Cambridge Analytica did researcher Aleksandr Kogan sell the data he received from Facebook?
  • Are you willing to change your business model in the interest of protecting individual privacy?
  • How many points of data does Facebook have on the average non-Facebook user?
  • How many Facebook share buttons are there on non-Facebook web pages?

A list of the follow-up questions is available HERE.
