Pallone Applauds Release of Viewer Protection Act Discussion Draft in Senate

December 9, 2016

WASHINGTON, DC – Energy and Commerce Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) issued the following statement today on the release of a Senate companion discussion draft to the Viewer Protection Act.

In January, Pallone unveiled a draft of the Viewer Protection Act to safeguard broadcast viewers and mobile broadband users who may be affected by the Federal Communication Commission’s (FCC) Broadcast Incentive Auction, which is reallocating broadcast spectrum for mobile broadband use. At the conclusion of the auction, the FCC will assign many broadcasters that remain on the air to new channels. The Viewer Protection Act will give the Commissioners the tools they need to ensure that no consumer loses their signal as a result of this repacking process.

“Millions of Americans depend on broadcast television for news and information, especially during emergencies, which is why I drafted the Viewer Protection Act to provide the resources necessary to make sure no one loses their signal. From the beginning, I have said that this should be a bi-partisan effort. That’s why I’m grateful to see a broad coalition of Senators agree and have circulated a companion to my bill. I look forward to working with all of them to pass this important legislation in the next Congress.”
