Pallone on CBO’s Updated Analysis on Trumpcare’s Medicaid Cuts

June 29, 2017

Energy and Commerce Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) issued the following statement today following the release of new analysis from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) on the Senate Trumpcare bill's long term impact on Medicaid:

"Today's updated analysis from CBO shows how Trumpcare will continue to negatively transform the Medicaid program long into the future. The catastrophic cuts in the Senate version of Trumpcare would force states to make impossible decisions, and would lead to rationing of care for more than 74 million older Americans in nursing homes, sick children and pregnant women. We simply cannot allow Republicans to destroy Medicaid so that they can cut taxes for corporations and the wealthy."

Today's new analysis from CBO found that by 2036, Medicaid spending under Trumpcare will be 35 percent less than under current law. This devastating cut will force states to choose between cutting Medicaid or other services. The additional analysis was requested by Senator Finance Ranking Member Ron Wyden (D-OR) since the majority of Medicaid cuts in the Senate Trumpcare bill occur outside of the typical ten year budget analysis provided by CBO.
