Pallone on Elimination of Registry of Evidence-based Programs for Mental Health and Substance Abuse Treatment

January 16, 2018

Washington, DC – Energy and Commerce Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) released the following statement today in response to the Trump Administration's elimination of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP) last week, which was intended to provide the public with information on evidenced-based mental health and substance use disorder interventions:

"I am deeply concerned by the Trump Administration's recent announcement suspending the National Registry of Evidence-based Program and Practices.

"At a time when the opioid epidemic is taking far too many lives in communities across the country, it is vital that individuals, families, and the health care community have access to robust information on evidence-based practices and programs for treatment. Given the devastation of the opioid epidemic, it is critically important that SAMHSA continue to provide information to the public, in an easily accessible and understandable format.

"While I have serious concerns about the Administration's actions, I will continue to work with SAMHSA to ensure that the public has access to this important information. We must ensure that the suspension of this national registry does not decrease the information available on evidence-based programs and practices on substance use disorders and mental health."
