Pallone Praises New Cooperation Between U.S. and Canada to Combat Climate Change

March 10, 2016

Lauds New Joint Commitment to Reduce Methane Emissions

Energy and Commerce Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) today issued the following statement praising new efforts between the U.S. and Canada to cooperate on a broad range of climate issues that will help both nations successfully implement the Paris Climate Agreement:

“Today’s joint announcement demonstrates the commitment of the U.S. and Canada to tackle the threat of climate change, protect public health and the environment, and actively transition to a clean energy future.

“I’m especially pleased that EPA will start developing methane regulations for existing sources later this spring in addition to the work they are already doing on new sources. Methane pollution is 25 percent more damaging to our climate than carbon dioxide, and it is crucial that we reduce these emissions in order to meet our climate goals.

“Canada and the U.S. have shown great leadership in ensuring the successful implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement, and I applaud the renewed focus on deploying policies for long-term greenhouse gas reductions, and clean energy cooperation. I also commend Prime Minister Trudeau and Canada for joining the call to cut harmful methane pollution from the oil and gas sector.”
