Pallone Praises President Obama for Signing Updated Toxic Substances Control Act

Energy and Commerce Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) today released the following statement commending President Obama for signing into law H.R. 2576, the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act, which modernizes the Toxic Substances Control Act. Pallone, who was a lead House Democratic negotiator on the final legislation, attended the bill signing today at the White House. The bill passed the House last month by a vote of 403-12. The Senate unanimously approved the bill earlier this month.

"I applaud President Obama for signing a major piece of environmental legislation into law named after New Jersey's longtime environmental and public health champion, the late Senator Frank R. Lautenberg.

"The Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act modernizes the Toxic Substances Control Act. This long-overdue update to our outdated chemical safety laws will protect public health and the environment by making it easier for the EPA to test and regulate toxic chemicals found in consumer products and the environment. Dangerous chemicals like lead, BPA, phthalates, and asbestos have no place in our homes, our children's toys, or our environment. Reforming this law is an important step forward in protecting children, pregnant women, seniors, workers, and the environment."
