Pallone & Rush Blast NRC’s Final Rule for Nuclear Reactor Safety

January 24, 2019

The Final Rule was Intended to Apply Lessons Learned from Fukushima Daiichi Accident, but was Undermined by Last Minute Changes

Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Energy Subcommittee Chairman Bobby L. Rush (D-Ill) released the following statement today blasting the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC) final rule intended to implement safety lessons learned from the 2011 accident at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi plant:

"We are extremely disappointed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's action today. A number of critical safety measures that would have required plants to prepare for the potential impacts of seismic and flooding hazards were excluded from this final rule. It is dangerous to leave out the most important enhanced safety measures. As the Energy and Commerce Committee embarks on its oversight of NRC this Congress, we will have questions for the Commission as to why it chose to abandon the most important provisions of this rule."
