Pallone Statement on Aetna’s Withdrawal from ACA Marketplaces

August 16, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Energy and Commerce Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) issued the following statement today upon news that Aetna, the nation's third largest health insurer, intends to withdraw from the majority of Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplaces:

"Aetna's decision to exit a majority of ACA Marketplaces puts profits over people. I'm troubled by reports that this announcement could be in retaliation to the Justice Department's decision last month to file a lawsuit to block a merger between Aetna and Humana. Aetna's CEO had touted the ACA Marketplace as a good investment in April, which raises very serious concerns about Aetna's sudden change of heart. Regardless of Aetna's decision, the ACA Marketplace will continue to provide quality and affordable care to millions of Americans for years to come."
