Ranking Members Levin, Pallone: GOP’s Subpoenas another Partisan Attack on ACA

May 4, 2016

WASHINGTON, DCWays and Means Committee Ranking Member Sander Levin (D-MI) and Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) today released the following statement in response to partisan subpoenas issued by Chairmen Kevin Brady (R-TX) and Fred Upton (R-MI), requiring the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to submit documents related to cost-sharing reductions under the Affordable Care Act:

As we turn the calendar and begin a new month, it’s no surprise that House Republicans have decided to dust off the same old playbook and wage yet another attack on the Affordable Care Act. Millions of Americans have directly benefitted from the health care law’s cost-sharing reductions, which play an important role in lowering out-of-pocket expenses and making health care more affordable.

These subpoenas are merely part of a larger pattern of wasting taxpayer time and money on undermining the ACA. House Republicans have filed a lawsuit against the Administration in federal court, challenging the implementation of the cost-sharing reduction program. Today’s subpoenas, which seek the same information that is the subject of the lawsuit, are an attempt to make an end-run around the judicial process.

Instead of pursuing partisan witch hunts, Congress should be focusing on the pressing health issues before it – like helping the residents of Flint and providing resources to combat the Zika virus. The American people deserve better.
