Pallone and Schakowsky Invite FTC Commissioner Slaughter to Testify at E&C Subcommittee Hearing
Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) and Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade Subcommittee Ranking Member Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) released the following statement on inviting Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Commissioner Rebecca Slaughter to testify at this week’s subcommittee hearing on online dangers to children:
“Last week, President Trump illegally attempted to fire the two Democratic FTC Commissioners. This is not only illegal, but it undermines the independent agency’s ability to fulfill its mission of protecting Americans.
“Attempting to fire Commissioners Slaughter and Bedoya is a blatant giveaway to the Big Tech CEOs who sat on the dais of the president’s inauguration at the expense of everyday Americans. This illegal power grab must be reversed, and if Committee Republicans are really serious about protecting children from online harms, they would join us in making this demand of the president.
“Commissioner Slaughter has been a champion for protecting consumers since she was appointed to the FTC by President Trump in 2018, including fighting for people’s privacy, holding Big Tech accountable, and lowering costs for hardworking Americans. We look forward to hearing from Commissioner Slaughter this week.”
