Pallone Lauds Consumer Protection Wins in the Government Funding Package

December 17, 2024

Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) released the following statement today applauding inclusion of key consumer protection policies in the government funding agreement:

“I’m pleased that we successfully negotiated the inclusion of several key provisions in the government funding package that will protect consumers.

“The bill includes provisions I’ve championed to crack down on junk hotel and live event fees. This will help put an end to the scourge of surprise junk fees consumers encounter when buying a concert ticket or checking out of a hotel.

“The package also includes important new protections against the non-consensual publishing of intimate images, including AI deepfakes. This is part of a bipartisan effort to combat sexual exploitation online and provides important new tools to take down these images and prosecute offenders.

“I’m also relieved it includes new restrictions that will make it harder to access high concentrations of sodium nitrate chemicals that can cause poisoning and death, and stronger safety standards for lithium-ion batteries to help prevent deadly fires.

“I’ll continue to work to advance commonsense, bipartisan legislation that protects consumers and lowers costs for hardworking Americans.”
