Pallone: Trump is Going to Try to Gaslight You Tonight

Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) released the following statement today ahead of President Trump’s address before a joint session of Congress: 

“President Trump is going to try to gaslight and distract you tonight. He’ll make promises that he has no intention of keeping and make baseless claims that aren’t grounded in fact. Here’s what is really going on: 

“Trump promises to protect Medicaid days after throwing his support behind a House Republican budget that would impose the largest health care cuts in history. The Trump-Republican budget will take health care away from millions of Americans, shutter local hospitals and nursing homes, and spike health care costs for middle-class Americans all so that billionaires and big corporations can pay less in taxes than they already do. 

“Trump continues to tout energy independence, but he’s selling out homegrown affordable, clean energy to line the pockets of his billionaire polluter friends. Trump and his minions are flouting judges’ orders and stealing the money Congress intended as investments in our towns, our workers, and in American manufacturing. 

“Trump says he’s lowering everyday costs for American families, but he has yet to fulfill that promise and is instead focused on dismantling the federal government, which will result in devastating consequences for the American people.

“Trump’s speech will be filled with lies – he shouldn’t be trusted.”
