Pallone Announces Hearing on Government Shutdown

January 24, 2019

Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) today announced a full Energy and Commerce Committee hearing next Thursday, January 31, 2019, at 10 am inRoom 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building on the ongoing Trump federal government shutdown. The Chairman made the announcement at the Committee's Organizational Meeting for the 116th Congress. Following, are the Chairman's prepared remarks announcing the hearing:

"I would like to announce that next Thursday we will hold a full Committee hearing on the impact the Trump Shutdown is having on the affected agencies within the jurisdiction of our Committee. It defies logic that hundreds of thousands of American workers are once again going to miss another paycheck this week. When this shutdown began, I never imagined that it would have lasted this long. It is very unfortunate. And therefore, as part of our oversight responsibilities and in order to learn more about how this shutdown is affecting the federal agencies, I will be holding a full Committee hearing next Thursday morning at 10 am. It is my hope that the Senate and President will finally act, and that the shutdown will end soon.

"I had previously announced our first three hearings never believing that this shutdown would still be going on when this Committee had a chance to organize. Those critical hearings on climate change, the future of the Affordable Care Act and oversight of the Trump Administration's inhumane Family Separation Policy will still occur, but they will not be next week."
